MarMar
First Impressions
Walking up to MarMar on Matošića street, you’d honestly never guess what you’re about to find inside. The entrance is pretty understated — no flashy signage or grand lobby that screams “look at me.” But that’s actually part of its charm. This four-star boutique spot sits right in the thick of Split‘s old town, and I mean really in the heart of it. You’re literally steps away from Diocletian’s Palace, which is both incredible and slightly overwhelming until you realize you can duck back into this peaceful haven whenever the crowds get too much.
The Location Magic
Here’s what I love about staying here — you can roll out of bed and be at the Peristyle in about two minutes, but you’re tucked away enough that you won’t hear every tour group that passes by at 7 AM. The narrow stone streets around MarMar are lined with little konobas and wine bars that most tourists never find because they’re too busy following the main routes. I spent half my evenings just wandering these side streets, discovering places that felt like local secrets. Couples especially seem to get this — apparently they rate the location 9.9 out of 10, and honestly, I can see why.
The Room Experience
My room was on the second floor, and while it wasn’t huge (this is old town Split, after all), it felt thoughtfully designed. The stone walls give you that authentic Dalmatian vibe, but they’ve added modern touches that actually work — good lighting, a comfortable bed, and air conditioning that you’ll definitely appreciate in summer. The bathroom was compact but well-planned, with a rainfall shower that had surprisingly good pressure. What really struck me was how quiet it was at night, considering we’re talking about the busiest part of the city.
Daily Rhythms
Mornings here have this lovely rhythm to them. There’s no massive hotel restaurant, which I actually preferred — instead, you’re encouraged to explore the neighborhood cafes. I found this little place around the corner that does the best burek, and another spot where locals grab their morning coffee. The staff at MarMar seems to know all these places and they’re genuinely helpful with recommendations, not just pointing you toward tourist traps. They also sorted out parking for me, which in Split’s old town is basically a small miracle.
Why Guests Love It
Look, if you want a big resort with pools and spa treatments, this isn’t your place. But if you want to actually experience Split — I mean really live in it for a few days — MarMar gets it right. The 9.3 rating makes sense when you consider what they’re offering: a genuine base in one of Croatia’s most fascinating cities, without the tourist hotel nonsense. You’re staying where locals actually live and work, in a building that’s been part of this neighborhood’s story for who knows how long. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, even though plenty of smart travelers have obviously figured it out before you.
Apartments in Split suit families with stone terraces, full kitchens, and sunset views across the Adriatic.
