Old Captain’s Apartments – in a pine wood by the sea and tennis courts
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Old Captain’s Apartments – in a pine wood by the sea and tennis courts, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name alone. But you know what? Sometimes the most descriptive names are exactly right. This four-star property sits tucked away in a gorgeous pine grove, and I mean literally steps from the Adriatic — you can hear the waves from your apartment terrace. The whole setup feels like someone’s well-kept secret, especially considering how close you are to Split‘s bustling center.
Location & Neighborhood
The location is honestly what sold me on this place. You’re about a 15-minute walk from Diocletian’s Palace, but far enough away that you escape the cruise ship crowds that flood the old town during peak season. Put Firula is this quiet residential street where locals actually live — I watched neighbors chatting over morning coffee and kids riding bikes, which gave the whole area an authentic feel. The pine trees aren’t just decorative either; they provide real shade during those scorching July afternoons when the Croatian sun gets intense.
The Apartment Experience
Each unit comes with a proper kitchen, which I actually used more than I expected. There’s something satisfying about picking up fresh fish from the Split market and cooking it yourself — plus it saves money when you’re traveling as a couple. The apartments are spacious enough that you don’t feel cramped, and the furnishings strike that sweet spot between modern comfort and coastal charm. I particularly loved the private terraces; mine faced the sea, and I spent way too many evenings out there with a glass of local wine watching the sunset paint the water.
Activities & Amenities
The tennis courts mentioned in the name aren’t just for show — they’re actually well-maintained clay courts that locals use too. I’m not much of a tennis player myself, but I enjoyed watching the morning matches while having coffee. The real draw, though, is how close you are to some excellent swimming spots. There’s a small pebble beach just down the path, and while it’s not the postcard-perfect sand you might imagine, the water is incredibly clear. The parking situation is also worth mentioning — you get a designated spot, which is honestly a huge relief in Split where finding parking can be a nightmare.
Why Guests Love It
I can see why couples rate this place so highly — it strikes this perfect balance between privacy and accessibility. You’re not isolated, but you’re not dealing with hotel crowds either. The pine forest setting creates this natural buffer from the busier parts of Split, yet you can easily walk to restaurants, markets, and historical sites when you want to explore. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax and feel like you’re experiencing Croatia rather than just checking tourist boxes. The 9.4 rating makes complete sense once you spend a few days here.
To book a hotel in Split during Ultra Europe, visitors plan ahead to balance club nights with quiet Adriatic mornings.

Guest Reviews
There is a small grocery store across the street but there is also a big SPAR grocery store 7min walk away. We went to the SPAR and it was cheaper with a huge variety! We cooked breakfast all 3 days in the apartment and we cooked dinner one night as well. There are many many restaurants close by if you do not want to cook.
The air conditioning is amazing! We used the washer and drying rack outside all 3 days as well. Thus apartment is GREAT for families!
We also walked to the old city one night and it was about a 25 min walk. It was nice but the beach is the BEST!
The hosts will answer any questions you have! Truly a great apartment with great location to beaches and secure and safe for families!
The view from the terrace was incredible. The owner is very friendly and helpful.
We highly recommend this accommodation!
The only thing you have to know before, is that there are some steep steps to get to the appartment. For us it was no problem, but it may be one for older or disabled people.
The apartament was very clean and fully equipped with everything you need! I slept really well.
As the lady after me checked in very late, I was allowed a late check-out, where I could still use the room and enjoy the terrace. I even got fresh coffee, juice and a pastry, which was so sweet and made my last hours on the terrace even more enjoyable!
I can highly recommend and would always come back. Thank you!
To the old town you can either walk (about 20min) (=> the fastest way is over the train tracks, ask for it, also the Uber drivers will tell you) or take an Uber, which costs between 6 and 9€ depending on the time)
